An Interview with_Rucha Thigale
To better understand the integration of emerging technologies and how they are being exploited by students on the Illustration Programme at Camberwell College of Arts we decided to speak to Rucha Thigale.
Rucha is an MA Illustration student and was first introduced to ETRG through ongoing research and Fried Egg, a short film written by Rucha and made using Artificial Intelligence(AI) software. In the relatively new landscape of machine learning it can be challenging to navigate the strong opinions provoked by the subject. Caution is required, care is necessary, reflection is essential – precedent demands this. In many ways this film epitomises the creative potential of emerging technologies when understood and aligned appropriately to more traditional creative methodologies.
Fried Egg brings together ideas that Rucha has been exploring through research and her passion for writing. The protagonists poetic narration questions her relationship with her mother, concerns and fears reach out across the multiple realities of place, time and space. The results are visually rich, moving and immersive.
Fried Egg has been selected for inclusion at +RAIN Film Festival, Barcelona, 2024.
+RAIN is the first European festival of films generated using artificial intelligence.
What follows is an interview discussing Rucha’s approach to the integration of emerging technology in her methodology and thoughts on future practice.
In Fried Egg we have a layered relationship existing across space and time. Could you describe the ideas that underpin the work and how you arrived at this concept?
Rucha answer here.
To best understand how your practice has arrived at this point could you provide a bit of context with regards to your process. What do you feel are the ideas, processes and workflows that define your practice?
Rucha answer here.
Has your approach to making work evolved since you have been studying at Camberwell?
Rucha answer here.
How were you supported by the course and to what extent was this support necessary for the development of your film, Fried Egg?
Rucha answer here.
For us and the readers could you please describe the process(es) and technologies that you are using in your research?
Rucha answer here.
At what point did you start considering AI as a possible vehicle for your ideas?
Rucha answer here.
Have you had time to think about wider societal concerns regarding the technology you are using, and did it come into consideration when you were making Fried Egg?
Rucha answer here.
What did the introduction of AI technology bring to your most recent works and ideas?
Rucha answer here.
What challenges have you encountered and are any of the results unexpected?
Rucha answer here.
How has the integration of digital technology impacted upon personal methodologies, for this project and beyond?
Rucha answer here.
Are there implications for your work beyond this project?
Rucha answer here.
What do you think other students might learn from your experiences working with AI and other digital processes?
And to follow on, how important do you think it is for students to embrace technologies in their workflow(s)?
Rucha answer here.
Do you think it is possible to gain an equitable amount of exposure and/or visibility without the opportunities afforded by emerging technologies?
Rucha answer here.
How do your most recent works sit alongside other work in your portfolio, or does it mark a new direction in personal practice?
Rucha answer here.
It’s a big question, but in your opinion what are the implications of emerging technology for the discipline of illustration?
Rucha answer here.
Should Illustrators be concerned?
Rucha answer here.
