Accessible Learning Strategies

Background
During the Accelerate research project ETRG experimented significantly with Frame VR, a third party office and conference platform. This platform enables the creation of 3D web environments using in platform assets or those uploaded by users. With relative ease users can customise environments and look beyond the recognised languages of existing VR spaces. Whilst other platforms offer more advanced visual capabilities FrameVR provides the accessibility necessary to host a wide range of user needs.

In response to early investigations ETRG began to explore possible uses for such spaces and how they might challenge and enhance orthodox and established academic practices. Project introductions and briefings offered one such opportunity.

In October 2023 Matthew Hawkins developed an alternative space with the intention of translating more conventional approaches to learning materials into image based digital experience with greater alignment to the discipline. This space was presented at the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Practices inaugural gathering, Digital Interdisciplinary Arts Salon (DIAS) at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore.

The Garden Space
Entered first, the garden space has been temporarily curated with a wide range of content. Audio, moving image, still images, text and objects are curated here to test the potential of this format.

How might an alternative 3D web environment be used to enhance student engagement and participation? How might other subjects be presented within these new boundaries? Content has the potential to create excitement for the journey that lies ahead, moving beyond the confines of the A4 sheet or PowerPoint presentation. Curation offers the potential to add levels of interaction,
adding an element of play and encouraging investigation.

The Studio Space

Having explored the range of visual material in the garden space, students progress through a portal into a studio space. This space acknowledges the physical attributes of studios at Camberwell helping to provide continuity for students. Conventional and digital project content, such as videos and tutorials, is aligned here for students to navigate. Learning materials can be viewed and downloaded in recognised formats, such as pdfs. FrameVR spaces can be viewed both in VR and in web browsers.

This test space will act as a template for an extended case study on the MA Evolutions Pathway in 2024/25.
